Vibr8
Lyrics and music by Alex Waters
Oil and water
Softest surrender
Honey and silk
I eat what I kill
Berry and lace
I can’t see your face
Cherry and passion
You’re just a distraction
There’s somebody else
Under my tongue
I need to know, will you be the same
When you wake me up the following day?
I need to know if I’m really safe
Inside
Pineapple kisses
Whispered admissions
Digital necklace
Tonight we are reckless
Strawberry signal
Keeping the vigil
Fruit on the vine
But we’re out of time
There’s somebody new
Under my tongue again
I need to know, will you be the same
When you wake me up the following day?
I need to know if I’m really safe
Inside
Spin me round
And around
And around
And around
Spin around
Spin me round
And around
And around
And around
Spin around
I need to know, will you be the same
When you wake me up the following day?
I need to know if I’m really safe
Inside
Spin me round
And around
And around
And around
Spin around

The glassy guitars and slower pace of this song indicate its role well: this is the final track on The Signal Cycle. Since its release, "Vibr8" has been played live on multiple occasions, but always on acoustic guitar, and is sometimes titled "Vibrate" on setlists, losing the leet-speak vocabulary that connects it to "Un1ty."
There is also an acoustic performance circulating that wears the title "Vibrate (Hannah's Version)," but in his typically unhelpful fashion, Waters has given no explanation as to who Hannah is, or what role she played in the creation of the recording.
Almost a decade before Circa 1996 came to be, Waters performed alternative/indie songs in the Boston metro area under his own name, and the "spin me round" lines in this selection have been, according to one interview, pilfered from that old project. If true, then some lyrical roots of Circa 1996 trace all the way back to 2016.
With a softer approach than any other song in their repertoire thus far, "Vibr8" interestingly used to be titled "Vibr8 & 8" in earlier demos, which some believe implied a more vivid depiction of sexual relations than the subtle fruit imagery of this piece.
Status: Canonical
