Royal
Lyrics and music by Alex Waters
In your room
Half-awake
Hold my cue
I could break
Line me up
Breath and chalk
Bite your lip
Now you hush
And you won’t ever say my name
And I'll never ask you to pretend
Coming down
Golden dusk
In your crown
Still you hush
And you won’t ever say my name
And I'll never ask you to pretend
How can I lose what you never had?
And you won’t ever say my name
I’ll never ask you in the end
How can I lose what I never had?
Hush

Concerns about this song emerged immediately after the release of the "How Can I Lose What I Never Had?" EP, revolving around the near-obvious cocaine imagery in its verses. A wellness check called to Waters' home found no illegal substances, although some online commenters have insisted that the authorities simply didn't look hard enough. Waters spelled out his side of the story in a December 2025 interview, claiming the "chalk," "line," and "bite your lip" phrases instead described a date at a billiards lounge.
The production of this track used one very atypical recording technique. A studio engineer later explained that when initial vocal takes didn't have the right sound, Waters covered the microphone with his palm and delivered the lines directly into the back of his hand. The resulting "detached" vocal technique would eventually be replaced, and improved upon, by digital effects added in post-processing.
