Floris

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

Return!

I miss the enemy

I miss what I became

The only guarantee

Is change

But you

Have been warned

To love

Is to return

I miss the steps I took

Potential thrown away

I'm pounding at the door

(Whispering, whispering, whispering, whispering, whispering)

"Please stay"

And you

Have been warned

To love

Is to return

I

Have been warned

You never left

I never learn

"Floris" marks a significant stylistic change in Circa 1996's discography. A new drummer and a more focused lyrical approach are immediately apparent; both are partly explained by the song's origin in Waters' now-defunct side project, code-named Column.

The title has been a subject of debate. A former coworker of Waters noted, via an online discussion board, that Floris is the name of a residential street in Colorado Springs, sparking speculation about whether the song's subject matter might have taken place there. Frustratingly, Waters has not yet weighed in on this. In Latin, floris is the genitive form of flos, meaning flower, and can therefore mean "of the flower." Possession of something beautiful, and the anxiety produced by that possession, recurs frequently in the band's more recent releases.
