Bloodmemories

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

Hot sun beating on my back

a royal monument is rising from the act

Luscious green, swaying palm trees

someday in the future, this will be a mystery

I was there, watching through the torchlight

sandstone altar offering to starlight

We conform long before we’re born

no one can tell me I wasn’t here before

I need to know

have I met you before?

This body was mine

before it was yours

Cold wind cutting through the plain

someone many centuries before me wore my name

So strong, we might be the same

sailed across the water with a raven for my aim

I was there, steering by the fire glow,

bleeding on the deck to keep the promise made whole

My life, a worthy sacrifice

I remember your eyes lifted to the ice

Rejoice

for you will live again

I need to know

is it already time?

You watched me explore

before you were mine

I’ve been me before!

Early morning, wading to the shore;

they swore that I would make it, but I was never sure

Facing down those who kill for sport

I could be a martyr in another nameless war

Duck and cover, locket with a lover

every single life pulls you and me together

Closed my eyes, one blink to another

that’s about the time I woke up someone else’s brother!

Rejoice

for I will live again

I think I know

have you ever died?

The story we share

was the same the whole time

You’ll destroy my heart

when my life restarts

I remember us

I’ve been me before!

The topic of reincarnation is nothing new to alternative rock and heavy metal, but this take on it is unusually explicit. Three different vignettes are offered, each of a different time in history, and then the chorus ties them together by suggesting that the narrator is addressing himself, either in the past or future. While the exact scenes could be up for debate about when or where they take place, it is believed by this site's archivist that they depict Ancient Egypt, Old Norse sea travel, and the D-Day landings at Normandy Beach in France.

At no point in the album is Waters' belief in the continuation of souls through multiple bodies made clearer, than in this track. But this, in contrast to "Revolving Door" where the concept album's antagonist switches bodies continually, tells a story where our protagonist can also transfer his consciousness across generations.

A much earlier demo recording, made before the project's name had been established, included a fourth scene from the First World War, as well.
