Cancer & Virgo

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

The way that you suffered has taught me so well

The decades of longing inside of your shell

But can you forgive yourself?

Heaven awaits you ‘cause this life is hell

The darkness surrounding, you’ll soon ring the bell

We all have to face ourselves

Laced with the memory before our farewells

You tore me to pieces, still under your spell

I searched for a meaning as everything fell (apart!)

Was there any life left inside your eyes?

(When I kissed you for the last time)

When pain becomes Master and love becomes Ghost

You made me a Giver, then I overdosed

Still chasing the echoes of what I want most

Now under the mountains and under the coast

I cried out for someone to hear what I wrote

You played the parasite, I played the host

Was there any life left inside your eyes

When I kissed you for the last time?

Was there any depth in the words you said

When you left me for the dead?

The way that you suffered has taught me so well

The decades of longing inside of your shell

But can you forgive yourself?

It’s not my fault

It’s not my fault

It’s not my fault

It’s not!

(It’s not my fault)

Was there any life left inside your eyes

When I kissed you for the last time?

(When I kissed you for the last time)

Was there any depth in the words you said

When you left me for the dead?

(It’s not my fault)

Was there any life left inside your eyes

When I kissed you for the last time?

(When I kissed you for the last time)

Was there any depth to the words you said

When you left me

When you left me

When you left me for the dead?

This track is often regarded by fans of the group as Circa 1996's strongest lyrical showing. But the title has remained a topic of debate, as an independent source verified Waters' birthday as 14 March, 1996, and thus a Pisces. Given that the project would only increase in its autobiographical voice, it seems as though the song is about two individuals, unusually told from a perspective besides Waters' own. Repeated attempts to determine their identities have been unsuccessful.

The imagery combines both a variety of views: Christian ("Heaven awaits you..."), pagan ("under your spell"), and scientific ("parasite" and "host") to weave a mythos that seems close to Omnism. However, that label has been repeatedly rejected by our subject.

Musically, the song introduces what would soon become a tell-tale sign of Waters' guitar work: pick scrapes and other "non-fretboard" sounds. Later, as concertgoers would note, Waters became more confident in his six-string abilities, leading to more experimentation.
