Mechagodzilla

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

Neon sunrise, diamond lake

I can't lose your iron gaze

Said I loved you, that's a lie

Built upon you, born to die

Rise again from the ashes of the wake

You & I are untouchable today

Rise again from the ashes of the wake

You & I are unbreakable today

Neon sunrise, diamond lake

I can't lose your iron gaze

Said I loved you, that's a lie

Built upon you, born to die

Rise again from the ashes of the wake

You & I are unforgivable today

Rise again from the ashes of the wake

You & I are unfortunately the same

Under crimson sky,

I look out on the wreckage

I miss you so much.

Under crimson sky,

With nothing left but memory

I miss you so much.

Under crimson sky,

Forgive the love that left me

I miss you so much.

This 3 minute, 16 second offering introduces a very important musical development to the Circa 1996 sound: a Japanese shakuhachi flute, which accompanies the distorted guitars prominently in the song's intro. This instrument would return in later recordings, and is routinely cited by Waters as one of his favorite elements in the group's debut EP. Conflicting reports state that this song is either the earliest known demo in Circa 1996's catalogue, or second-oldest, just behind the release's first track, "Salem."

This is also the only release, to date, in which the guitars and bass guitars are strung in the "Drop-C" tuning made popular by nu-metal and hard rock acts throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

The final three stanzas in this song are delivered as haiku, a form of Japanese poetry where the first line contains five syllables, the next contains seven, and the final line contains five again.

With one notable exception in February 2026, this song has only ever been performed live on acoustic guitar by Waters. At one point, the official tablature was available to the public, but it has since been lost.
