Monochrome

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

I stood where the light

Starts to lose its meaning

A half-step gone

I stayed with you

As if that counts for anything

No sign at all

I crossed myself

As if I understood a thing

No habit lost

I took my name

Since you don’t want it anyway

And held it up

There’s one more step

I haven't got to take

No word given

And left it behind

As if that ever meant a thing

As if that ever meant a thing

As if that ever meant a thing

"Monochrome," like the other two tracks on The Days Between, Short-Lived, owes its origin to Waters' side project, Column. At the time that band dissolved, the song was circulating as a demo titled "Threshold" - a former bandmate confirmed this, weeks after release. It would be reasonable to suggest the older title made more sense, as most of this song's lyricism rotates around an upcoming choice to leave someone or something: "one more step," "half-step gone," and "left it behind."

Like many other songs in Waters' collection, the intersection of religion ("I crossed myself") and uncertainty is explored here, albeit not in-depth this time.

Musical flavor is provided by the return of a shakuhachi flute, last heard on "Mechagodzilla" with the band's first EP.
