Revolving Door
Lyrics and music by Alex Waters
You show up with a new face
But I’ve met you before
New skin, new eyes, new lips, new name
Through the revolving door
(Through the revolving door)
You’re back with a new spark
Last time wasn’t enough
New laugh, new excuses, anyway it’s useless
I won’t die for love
But I’m sure I’ll see you soon
(Left, right, left, right)
So good to see you again
(Left, right, left, right)
Maybe this time it’s the end
But you’re back with a new face
This time, one I adore
New try, new communion, new taste, new reunion
Nothing but the revolving door
And I’m sure I’ll see you soon
(Left, right, left, right)
So good to see you again
(Left, right, left, right)
Maybe this time it’s the end
(Left, right, left, right)
So good to see you again
(Left, right, left, right)
Maybe this time it’s the end
So you’re back with a new face
(Back with a new face)
This time I brought one too
(This time I brought one too)
You can hunt me down in this life and once again when I die
But I’m through with you
(I'm through with you)
I will never see you anymore
(Left, right, left, right)
It was so good to see you again
(Left, right, left, right)
I’m thinking this time is The End
(Left, right, left, right)
'Cause I always end up alone
(Left, right, left, right)
You will not follow me home
So you’re back with a new face…
(Left, right, left, right)
(So you're back with a new face)
So you’re back with a new face…
(Left, right, left, right)
(So you're back with a new face)
So you’re back with a new face…
(Left, right, left, right)
(So you're back with a new face)
So you’re back with a new face…
(Left, right, left, right)
(So you're back with a new face)

Coming in at Track Four on The Signal Cycle, this song introduces the "cycle" part of the equation more explicitly. Here, the narrator encounters a sequence of women who don't resemble each other at all, but are in fact the same person, sneaking back into his life after several dismissals. Another theory about the lyrics suggests instead that she's the same person every time, after plastic surgery or perhaps even heavy makeup artistry.
The canonical meaning, according to Waters, is that this concept album's main antagonist keeps reappearing, using different facial features and body types as disguises to regain access into the story protagonist's life (see "The Making Of" for more on this).
Some audiences point to the "left, right" motif as a nod towards the "swipe culture" on dating apps, which arguably would form a left/right motion if the user "Liked" every other photo seen.
In the rhythm section, this was the first Circa 1996 song to be played in a time signature besides 4/4, instead carrying a more swinging feel due to its 6/8 signature. The end of the preceding song, "12 Mile" also blends nearly seamlessly into the start of this selection, implying that the subject matter is directly connected.
