The Mourning After

Lyrics and music by Alex Waters

Your head was on my shoulder

Before the sun came up

A whisper in the doorway

Said I was not enough

Awake!

The outline where you slept is

Still warm against my spine

Your memory is haunted

Remember: you were mine

Awake!

On your side of the bed

Wait!

Was there something else you said?

Your shadow crossed the carpet

Before I knew you left

You looked back for a moment

It’s better I forget

Awake!

On your side of the bed

Wait!

Was there something else you said?

Awake!

On your side of the bed

Wait!

Was it something that I said?

Morning breaks across my skin, and I’m

Mourning everything we’ve been

A lie

Awake!

On your side of the bed

Wait!

Was there something else you said?

Awake!

On your side of the bed

Wait!

Was it something that I said?

Titled with a sophomoric and slightly predictable play on words, this song contrasts with the preceding "Revolving Door" in a major thematic way: here, the narrator is the one being broken up with. Upon waking up to an empty bed, Waters reconstructs details like the temperature of the pillowcase to give this song an embodied perspective.
