Mexican Standoff
Lyrics and music by Alex Waters. Spoken word by Persephone Parker.
You want to get hurt
As much I want to hurt you
I want to stand my ground
As much as you want to walk away
Put the gun down!
I think we could start
Negotiating who bleeds first
Retaliating at each word
Hey! Put the gun down!
I think we can talk this out
Put the gun down!
We can talk this out
I think we can talk this out
We can talk this out
We can talk this out
We can talk this out
We can talk this out
We can talk this out
I think we can talk this out
I think we can
("You do this every time. You hide behind your philosophy and your big words just so you don’t have to feel anything. You make everything so complicated… I think you actually like being this way. And you do it every single time. You did it to her the same way you’re doing it to me. You don’t want a future. You just want another story. I don’t hate you. I just can’t take it anymore.")
I’m in love ("Don't say that")
Put the gun down
I think we can talk this out
(I’m in love) Put the gun down
I think we can talk
The words we’re looking for
Are already inside us
The whispers divide us
I’m in love with you! Put the gun down!
I think we can talk this out
I’m in love with you! Put the gun down!
I think we can talk this out
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
I’m in love with you!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
I’m in love with you!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
I’m in love with you!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
Don’t hurt me!
I’m in love with you!

A perennial fan favorite, this song's history is somehow arguably more interesting than its subject matter. First, the history: after the track lineup for The Signal Cycle was finalized, Waters is said to have booked one more block of time in the recording studio and added this to the album the next day. While at first it was unclear who voiced the spoken-word "argument" section halfway through the record, it was later revealed to be Persephone Parker, a longtime friend and soon-to-be frequent collaborator with Waters. Her contribution is pointedly critical of the narrator, but it remains unknown to this day if she was acting from a script or improvising the lines.
Next, the subject matter: obviously, the theme of toxic relationships is a common one to Circa 1996, but this song adds another layer by finally giving the other person a voice. The traumas of frequent fighting and codependency show through, and a Mexican Standoff is an outdated term for a three-way gunfight where no party stands to gain by initiating hostilities. Perhaps the terminology was picked up when Waters moved to Colorado Springs, sometime shortly before the inception of the band.
This song is notable for how it has only ever been performed live once, at Circa 1996: Live for One (N1ght Only), a candlelit concert special held in summer 2025.
